Joe Viglione has produced over two dozen compilation albums since the 1970s including The Boston Bootleg Vol. 1 and Boston Bootleg Vol. 2, Boston Rock & Roll Anthology Albums Vol 1-20, The Mass. Hard Rock/Heavy Metal album, The U.S. Anthology 1; he was publicist and an artist on Boston Gets Stoned - a New England tribute to The Rolling Stones co-produced by Jimmy Miller, has had tracks on a number of New Rose compilations in Paris (along with doing A & R work for the label) and has a new CD radio series, "The Demo That Got The Deal" Vol. 1, based on his program on the 50,000 watt rocker 93.7 FM WCGY which aired from 1991-1993. "Demo That Got The Deal" vol. 2 will be released October 31, 2005.

These are extremely rare - I have only 2 copies in my collection and both have melting/warping issues with the first songs on both sides, "They Saved Hitler's Brain" and "Summertime". So the first third of both songs are probably unplayable. The Creeper and The Plug probably play just fine as this disc appears mint (other than the warping issue) - and the picture on the paper cover is in good shape, a little wrinkled being pressed in 1978 and surviving to 2007 - 29 years later. This is truly Punk history from drummer Dom deYoung, bassist Frank Dehler, Guitarist Tom White and vocalist/guitarist Rich Parsons. Produced by Liz Ireland and Joe Viglione, engineered by Gary Soprano with screams on Hitler's Brain by Rita Ratt. My second copy, that I'm keeping, is more warped than this one. As the Varulven label has just suffered a terrible flood (about $10,000.00 in damage), old Rolling Stone Magazines, Trouser Press magazines, etc. soaked (I'm keeping them, but they are no longer in great condition), tons of Billboard Magazines - well, it's been most stressful so we are putting up items for sale on eBay to help with the move. These 2 Unnatural Axe E.P.s were NOT in the flood but they got damaged while being moved about 20 years ago - the sun warped them as they were moving from one place to another. I'm keeping one, willing to part with one because of the situation with the flood.

Produced by Count Joe Viglione, this is one of the finest of all the Boston Rock & Roll Anthologies. Opening up with Graham Maby and Gary Burke of THE JOE JACKSON GROUP backing up Dr. Greg Kroll, "Boom Shake" is perhaps the finest song of Greg Kroll's career. "There's Nothing Like A Hit" by Joe Vig with the Jon Macey Band would eventually go to #1 on The Boston Phoenix MP3 in Boston, Mass., 14 years after the release of this disc when it led off the LIFESWORK: 2005 AND COUNTING album from Vig. "We're Still Standing" features Charlie Farren of THE JOE PERRY PROJECT with John Kalishes of THE BEN ORR BAND and Adrian Medeiros from the legendary 60's band THE TANGERINE ZOO.

Welcome to VARULVEN RECORDS

Varulven Records is Boston's original rock label, established in 1976 as an offshoot of Varulven Magazine, a film/music fan magazine which first issued in 1969. The first releases, "The Salt Water Summers" by The Count and "Blowfish In The New Wave" by comedian Paul Lovell are considered rare gems from the modern rock movement of the mid-1970s. In 1978 Patrick Mathe' signed label president Joe Viglione to his Flamingo label in Paris, distributed by dance company Carrere. When Mathe' opened New Rose Records a couple of years later, he made Joe the A & R man who promptly signed Willie "Loco" Alexander and Johnny Thunders to New Rose/RCA and New Rose/Musidisc, respectively. El Loco brought Joe the tape of "I'm Sticking With You" that he had at his mom's house on Cape Cod. Obtaining permission from Willie, Jonathan Richman and Moe Tucker, that classic was put out on 45 RPM and immediately became a hit on Boston radio. Moe Tucker of The Velvet Underground said to the late Sterling Morrison "Joe is the reason we are touring" at a Cambridge nightclub called The Middle East when she introduced Joe to Sterling. We also released the "Another View" E.P. (Another "v.u. or view - another look at the Velvets; a title lifted by Polygram for their follow-up to V.U.) and are working on a tribute to Lou and The Velvets entitled "I`m Sticking With Lou." We also represented the late Jimmy Miller, producer of The Rolling Stones/ Motorhead/The Plasmatics/Buddy Guy/Traffic/Blind Faith, etc. We have a tribute to Mr. Jimmy in the works. We have released 25 compilations, mostly of Boston music. Willie Alexander, Count Viglione, comedian Blowfish, The Unnatural Axe, Moulty & The Barbarians, Tennie Komar with The November Group, Barb Kitson, Lady Carolyn, Jo Jo Laine (ex wife of Denny Laine from Wings), these artists have appeared on our discs over the years. The Unnatural Axe EP sells for $175.00. Sperm Bank Babies lp (Willie Alexander Live) and The Boston Bootlegs 1 and 2 have been long out of print. Our "bootleg" series are legitimate Boston underground band recordings. We are about to release a double cd featuring the best of Vol. 1 and 2, as well as a new collection of old favorites from the 70`s Boston scene Our mission is the preservation of cool Boston music that we love. We've found our artists bootlegged by other companies - including other Boston labels. It's the sincerist form of flattery - but is not as fair (or collectible) as obtaining the original recording on Boston's original rock label. Varulven Records is about to enter its 30th year. We intend to re-release some of our more popular titles with numbered and signed liner notes bringing more information to a public which wasn't around when these important recordings were first issued. We are proud of our legacy and will be bringing more titles to the GEMM site in the near future.
